How to Submit Claims for Out-of-Network Insurance Coverage

How can you file out-of-network claims for mental health therapy in Columbus, Ohio?

We know dealing with insurance companies can be difficult and confusing.

If you choose to submit your out-of-network insurance claims, we want to help you navigate the process, so we’ve outlined 4 steps below.

Step 1 – Understand your coverage.

Your first step to filing claims should be understanding your out-of-network coverage.

  • Take your insurance card and call the number on the back. If there is a specific number for mental/behavioral health, call that one. Otherwise, call the main number listed. Alternatively, you may also find answers to your coverage questions in your insurance portal, but exact answers can often be difficult to find, so we recommend calling if possible.

  • Here are some questions you’ll want to consider asking:

    • Do I have out-of-network coverage for mental/behavioral health?
    • What is my deductible? (This is the amount you would be responsible for before reimbursement starts.)
    • What percentage is covered after I meet my deductible?
    • What is your process for submitting out-of-network claims?

Step 2: Decide how you want to file your claim.

You can file your claim directly with your insurance company using the process they outlined when you spoke to them.

OR

You can download the Reimbursify app to submit your out-of-network claims for you.

  • Blue Boat Counseling has no affiliation with Reimbursify. We are only trying to help simplify the claim process, and after researching options for our clients, we feel Reimbursify is a great and reliable option for easy claim submission.
  • They do charge $3.99 per claim or you can purchase a 10-pack for $29.99. After understanding your coverage, this could be worth the few extra dollars to not deal with insurance company processes or worry about rejected claims (Reimbursify helps resolve them).

Step 3: Request a Superbill from your therapist.

Ask your therapist to generate a Superbill (detailed receipt specifically for insurance claims) outlining the sessions for the claims you plan to submit.

  • You will need a Superbill no matter which method you use for submitting (working directly with your insurance company or using the Reimbursify app).
  • Please keep in mind that mental health services cannot be covered by insurance without a diagnosis the companies are willing to cover. Your therapist can discuss the diagnosis most appropriate for your situation.
  • Also note that not all insurance companies will cover couples therapy specifically. You can find out if yours does by asking if they cover CPT code 90847.

Step 4: Submit your out-of-network claim.

You can continue to follow your insurance company’s unique process.

OR

If you are using Reimbursify, you will upload the Superbill(s) to their app, and they will submit the claim(s) for you.

  • Reimbursify will provide status updates along the way.
  • They will also help with rejected claim resolution, which unfortunately is not uncommon.
  • Once you reach your deductible, you should start receiving reimbursement checks from your insurance company.

We hope these steps have helped you navigate the claim filing process and solidify your decision about how to proceed based on your individual circumstances.
