All of this (and more) adds up to your mental health needing some serious attention. What tips, ideas, and suggestions are out there to maintain some peace of mind? But first, let’s start with the basics.
What Do We Mean by “Mental Health”?
MentalHealth.gov does a good job of defining the concept. Mental health is not something only adults should be concerned with. It is significant from our earliest days. Generally speaking, it involves how and what we think and feel. That also includes how we act and behave.
Under the label of “mental health,” we will find our social, psychological, and emotional systems. The combination of these three components very much impacts our personal interactions, our ability to handle stress, and our decision-making process.
It’s not uncommon to endure mental health issues. These can be the result of both nature and nurture. Genes play a role but so do your life experiences (especially in childhood). In some instances, mental health disorders can be hereditary. Your mental health very much influences your physical health too. I’d imagine you’re ready, by now, to learn more about improving your mental health.
5 Attainable Ways to Improve Your Mental Health
1. Connect With Others
Humans are social creatures. Our mental well-being is often predicated on our interpersonal choices. There’s a lot of unhealthy debate lately about keeping a distance. It is essential that we find ways to bridge the gap and connect with friends, family members, neighbors, co-workers, and more. The value this brings to your state of mind cannot even be fully calculated.
2. Avoid Groupthink
While connecting with others is great, there are potential pitfalls. In today’s divided and digital world, it can be easy to slip into forms of groupthink. For the sake of your mental health, keep your guard up to avoid feeling pressured or guilted into certain stances or perspectives. Take breaks to recalibrate (see #3).
3. Take Tech Breaks
You can avoid groupthink while giving your mind and eyes a much-needed break. Step away from your devices. Free yourself from the notifications, the headlines, the artificial intelligence, and the fear of missing out (FOMO).
4. Try New Things
There is a boatload of research extolling the benefits of learning new skills:
- It’s an avenue towards connecting with others (see #1 above)
- Increased self-esteem and confidence
- Giving your life more meaning and purpose
Even in a hectic and confusing time like this, there are always ways to try new hobbies and develop new skills. Get creative!
5. Practice Self-Care
This is the foundational choice for almost any mental or physical concern. Your mind and body require maintenance and attention. Along those lines, consider these steps:
- Maintain regular sleep patterns
- Practice stress management via relaxation techniques
- Make healthy eating choices and stay properly hydrated
- Take part in physical activity and exercise each and every day
